E-Scooters Rain Guide- Everything You Need to Know to Ride Electric Scooters in Rainy Season

04 Jul 2022

Electric Scooter

For a long time, we have been living with the fact that water and electronics do not mix. But it's impossible to resist the temptation of riding in the rain on an electric scooter. The purpose of this article is to explain whether electric scooters can be used in rainy weather.

Let’s deep dive to find the answers to all these questions:

  1. Are electric scooters waterproof?
  2. What happens when you ride an electric scooter in the rain?
  3. Is there any time when I should avoid riding an electric scooter in the rain?
  4. What should I do if my electric scooter gets wet?
  5. What is the best electric scooter for rainy weather?

1). Are electric scooters waterproof?

Despite not being waterproof, most electric scooters are water-resistant. It is the responsibility of every electric scooter manufacturer to indicate whether their products are resistant to solid and liquid particles by specifying an IP rating for their products.

2). What happens when you ride an electric scooter in the rain?

Different things happen with different electric scooters as different e-scooters act differently in the rain and everything e.g., their behavior and performance depend upon the quality of e-scooters. As we already described the manufacturer indicates whether a scooter is water-resistant or not by specifying an IP rating. So, if you can check if your scooter has a low IP rating or no IP rating then you should not take it outside as it can be extremely damaged by rainfall.

Besides this, whether you are driving an electric scooter or a petrol scooter, you should ride properly to suit the changing weather conditions. If conditions are wet and slippery, then you should drive slowly and must take corners gently. Wearing water-resistant clothes and looking for potholes while driving can save you from some extreme physical and vehicle damage.

3). Is there any time I should avoid riding an electric scooter in the rain?

Yes, there are definitely times when you should avoid riding your electric scooter. Some of them are 1). heavy rainfall, 2). Low visibility, and 3). Freezing Rain. Let's dig each point one by one to understand better:

Heavy rainfall

Enjoying the raindrops by riding your scooter slow in the rainfall can be extremely joyful but what if rainwater hits the ground hard? Then flash flooding from overflowing rivers and streams could be the possible case. In that condition, You should never ride your electric scooter at all, as this could permanently damage your e-scooter if the scooter becomes fully submerged.

Even, in these situations, people's safety can be severely compromised, and stucking far from your home can be the scenario for you.

Low visibility

During a torrential downpour, it can be dangerous to ride an electric scooter, even though a light sprinkle is unlikely to harm you. Scooters with good IP ratings won't be impacted, but they don't aid a rider's visibility when it's raining heavily. Ultimately, riding in low visibility increases accident chances, no matter how sophisticated the lighting system is on your e-scooter, your chances of having an accident are higher.

Freezing rain

Freezing rain is the condition when it's raining and the temperature goes down to the freezing point. In that case, you definitely shouldn’t be riding your electric scooter. Riding an electric scooter in these severe conditions your tires will have less or no grip, which could put you at a high risk of slipping. This condition can also cause the battery and motor to overwork, which can affect the longevity of both. but the good news is, in India, most of the region never faces any such condition because of our geographical position.

4). What should I do if my electric scooter gets wet?

Even if your electric scooter is water-resistant,  if you want it to last for many years, then you should protect it from water and moisture. Here we are sharing a few important tips to keep your electric scooter in good condition, even in wet weather.

Cover your electric scooter

  • Keep your e-scooter in a clean and dry place.
  • Cover your electric scooter with a good quality water-resistant cover, to safeguard it from dampness and humid conditions.

Perform regular maintenance

  • Do a whole check of your electric scooter regularly.
  • Check for corrosion, as this can drain e scooter's battery power which leads to a shortened lifespan of the scooter.

5). What is the best electric scooter for wet weather?
