Is Buying An Electric Scooter Feasible In India

17 Dec 2022

Electric Scooter

Electric scooters are growing at an unprecedented rate in India, with new manufacturers entering the market every day. During the first half of 2021, more than 23,000 electric two-wheelers were sold in India, more than that sold in 2022, and there is no doubt the number will spike even higher in the coming days. However, if one is planning to buy an electric scooter, he/she needs to consider a few things in order to determine whether an electric scooter is a good investment in India or is buying an electric scooter feasible in India? Let’s have a look at the pros and cons of buying an E Scooter in India:-

PROS:

Economical and Environment-friendly alternative to Commute:

We are trying to move towards a greener environment. There is a definite link between the rising cost of fuel and fuel impact on the environment.

When you opt for an electric scooter, you choose an economical environmental-friendly alternative to petrol-powered two-wheelers. Eventually, you are saving lots of bucks and our environment by choosing E scooters.

Charging convenience:

By adopting an electric scooter, you don't have to wait at congested petrol or gas stations to refuel your vehicle, as you can recharge your e-scooter battery at your home or at an e-charging station specially made for electric scooters.

Reducing Pollution:

Petrol-powered two-wheelers release harmful emissions into the atmosphere when they burn.

The human body is adversely affected by breathing such substances. As electric scooters are battery-powered and do not emit smoke, they minimize air pollution.

Furthermore, the electric scooter reduces noise pollution as well. A petrol-powered two-wheeler emits noise from the engine, while an electric scooter emits hardly any noise.

Lightweight:

Electric scooters don't have any engines, which is why they are very light in weight and provide an easy comfortable ride in comparison to petrol scooters.

Speed and Range:

The speed of electric two-wheelers is low in comparison to petrol ones. But Nowadays electric scooters are coming with good speed and range, which makes them a good mode of commuting locally and even for long distances. E.g., Gemopai’s Astrid Lite E-scooter comes with a top speed of 65 kmph and a range of 200km, which is good enough for lots of city commuters.

Best for Short Commutes:

This is true that many electric scooters come with high speed and good range. But most of them have a limited speed and short km range, which makes them the best commuting options for short distances only.

Prices and subsidies:

As the Indian government wants to promote the use of electric vehicles, they are providing lots of subsidies for buying electric vehicles. So when you go to buy an e-scooter, there is a high probability that you will get a subsidy scheme.

No Driving License Needed:

Did you know, many electric scooters come with a below 25 kmph maximum speed which makes them more safer and eligible to ride by people having no licence. Gemopai’s Ryder electric scooter is one of them.

CONS:

Limited Charging Outlets:

As the e-scooter industry is new, there are not enough charging outlets for consumers. Scooter sales are at their peak, but outlets are limited, which makes existing charging outlets full all the time.

Limited Repairing Shops:

EV technology is very new. And that is why skilled manpower (who can take care of these electric vehicles) is limited and so do repair shops. This makes maintenance/after-sales complicated for an EV commuter.

Conclusion:

All the above information indicates electric vehicles are the new normal and going to overtake all other modes of transportation in a few years. No doubt there are a few cons available, but soon when the demand will increase companies will find solutions for this and new startups will emerge to sort out these existing problems.
